Joao Souza thrashes inexperienced Tiago Fernandes in first round – Uruguay Open 2011 CH
Brazilian Joao Souza looked in top form as he thrashed his opponent in the first round match in Montevideo. Souza beat compatriot Tiago Fernandes in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. The players were competing in the 2011 Uruguay Open where
Souza remained in the lead the moment the match began.
Ranked at world number 466th, Fernandes could not create any lead nor reduced the games deficit that he had.
Fernandes could only score a single ace but his frustration compelled him to concede double faults five times in the match. Souza, ranked at 101st place, was exceptional in his serves as he delivered eleven aces in the
match. His focused serves did not let him concede more than one double fault in the match.
Souza had a 74% first serve winning ratio while Fernandes secured a 77% rate. Souze won 68% points from his first serve but gained advantage as he won 85% points from his second.
Fernandes, on the other hand, was in the hunt to secure any sort of lead, as he won 53% points from his first serve and only 29% points from his second serve.
23-year old Souza, who played the first round of the 2011 US Open, scored with three aces in the first set and conceded a double fault only once.  Fernandes delivered only a single ace and conceded double faults twice. His first
serve winning ratio was slightly better than Souza’s, as he secured an 80% ratio as compared to the 72% ratio that Souza had maintained.
18-year old Fernandes, who won the 2011 Junior Australian Open, could not keep up with the pace of his five-year older opponent. Fernandes could not break any of Souza’s serves while he could only three out of his five breakpoints.
Souza won the first set 6-3.
With the second set in progress, Souza was again in a comprehensive lead as he scored eight aces. His service games were flawless, as he did not concede any double fault.
His error-free run in the second set further leveraged his stance and gave him the momentum to retain his control over Fernandes.
Souza won 86% points from his first serve and improved his second serve winning ratio considerably as he won all of his points from his second serve. Fernandes, on the other hand, could win 50% points from his first serve and only
17% points from his second.
Winning 112 matches in the ATP circuit and losing 98, Souza did not give any chance to Fernandes in scoring any points.
Fernandes, who has a win/loss ratio of 9/16 in ATP circuit, could not reply for his immature stance and inexperienced nature on the tennis court. Fernandes won the second set 6-1 and made his way in the second round of the tournament.
