Joaquim Rodriguez Oliver wins the stage 6 of the Vuelta a Espana 2012
Joaquim Rodriguez Oliver of Team Katusha grabbed his first victory at the Vuelta a Espana 2012 after his splendid performance during the stage 6 of the race.
The cyclist completed the 175.4 pursuit to Jaca in a quickest time of 4 hours, 35 minutes and 22 seconds and occupied the top podium position.
Christopher Froome of Team Sky Procycling fell five seconds short at the second position with Alejandro Valverde Belmonte, Alberto Contador Velasco and Eros Capecchi occupied the third, the fourth and the fifth positions in the respective order.
The 33-year-old is having an outstanding season and has filled his bag with numerous victories in the earlier part of the season.
His first win of the season came with a first place finish at the La Fleche Wallonne and also bagged stage victories at the Giro d’Italia, Tour of the Basque Country and the Tirreno Adriatico.
The Spaniard secured the maximum number of 25 UCI points and leads the point’s category of the race with Christopher Froome, Alejandro Valverde, Alberto Contador and Eros Capecchi holding the next four positions in the respective order.
Thomas De Gendt succeeded during the first, the second sprints and the first Mountain of the race while Joaquim Rodriguez Oliver claiming the second mountain of the event.
The stage victory helped Rodriguez in defending the overall lead after the stage 6 classifications on Christopher Froome of Team Sky Procycling.
Froome is now ten seconds behind at the second position with Alberto Contador, Rigoberto Uran Uran and Robert Gesink holding the third, the fourth and the fifth positions respectively.
