Joaquim Rodriguez wins second stage and also takes overall lead in Vuelta A Burgos 2011
Katusha team’s Joaquim Rodriguez Oliver showed a brilliant performance in the second stage and was able to take a yellow leader’s jersey in Tour of Burgos 2011 on Thursday, August 4.
In the final 7 kilometres, Katusha team worked well and Rodriguez proved to be quickest from the other cyclists. The 32-year-old Spanish cyclists covered the distance of 144 kilometres in 3 hours, 26 minutes and 22 seconds.
After winning the stage, Oliver told the media, “The team today, once again, did an extraordinary job as witnessed by Moreno's second place. We took the race into our hands in the last 10km where all of my teammates did their best to make this happen."
Daniel Moreno Fernandez of Katusha was runner-up 3 seconds behind Spanish while stage one winner’s Samuel Sanchez unable to hold his lead and grabbed third place with difference of 7 seconds.
Kenny De Ketele (Topsport Vlaanderen-Mercator) and Etienne Tortelier (Saur-Sojasun) got a breakaway lead with a few kilometers remaining.
The Euskaltel-Euskadi team led the peloton and gained an advantage of a few seconds while 30 kilometres to go, the two cyclists including Jordi Simon of Caja Rural and Carlos Verona of Burgos 2016-Castilla y Leon bridged across.
After 10 kilometres, the peloton build a lead of 50 seconds but the break was doomed in the final 7 kilometres. While Simon launched an aggressive attack but failed and brought back. FDJ and Movistar team worked well together in the front of the peloton
but when they reached at the top of the ascent then Katusha took control.
Sanchez made a decisive move but failed and Rodriguez crossed the finish line without any difficulty.
Rodriguez took the overall lead with the timing of 7 hours, 17 minutes and 29 seconds while Sanchez was runner-up with 7 seconds behind the Spaniard. David Lopez Garcia was in third place with the difference of 17 seconds.
Oliver said, "I'm very happy about this result, finally, after several brilliant placings, I was able to take this great win that brought me to first place in general classification.”
The next stage starts in Pradoluendo and end in Belorado (TTT). All the cyclists will cover the distance of 11.6 kilometres.
