Joaquim Rodriguez wins the tenth stage of the Giro d’ Italia 2012
Joaquim Rodriguez of Team Katusha succeeded during the tenth stage of the Giro d’ Italia after his remarkable performance during the event.
He rode brilliantly to receive the honour and his outstanding performance during the 187 kilometre chase to Assisi has also earned him the top overall spot.
The Spaniard crossed the finish line in a fastest time of 4 hours, 25 minutes and 5 seconds after a photo-finish.
Bartosz Huzarski of Team NetApp finished two seconds behind and occupied the second spot with Giovanni Visconti of Team Movistar finishing at the third spot.
The 33-year-old was delighted after his first Giro victory in the current season and is keen to build up on his current lead for the coming stages of the race.
He briefed, “It was an important stage win especially for the bonus”.
“Some journalists told me about the finish here and I now realise that it is suited to me. When you get to a finish like this one you have to use it to your advantage”.
Stage 10 disappointed a number of spectators as their local hero Filippo Pozzato of Team Farnese Vini-Selle Italia had to withdraw the race because of a broken hand.
Pozzato crashed during the stage 9 of the Giro d’ Italia and was determined to continue for the coming stages of the race.
However, the cyclist has now withdrawn from the race and will be treated by the team doctor for the coming week.
Rodriguez is enjoying a tremendous season and has already filled his pockets with numerous victories in the first half of the 2012.
He finished first at the La Fleche Wallonne, second at the Tour of the Basque Country and occupied the sixth overall position at the Tirreno-Adriatico 2012.
The cyclist has also claimed stages at the Tour of the Basque Country and the Tirreno-Adriatico in the current season and is looking good for the coming stages of the season.
The 33-year-old is now leading the stage 1 classifications with a total lead of 17 seconds over Ryder Hesjedal of Team Garmin-Barracuda.
Paolo Tiralongo of Team Astana is further 15 seconds behind at the third position with Roman Kreuziger, Benat Intxausti Elorriaga and Ivan Basso holding the fourth, the fifth and the sixth positions respectively.
