Joaquin Estevez wins at the Abierto International Championship on the European Challenge Tour
The Abierto International Copa Antioquia Championship of the European Challenge Tour wrapped up on Sunday in Colombia. Joaquin Estevez of Argentina emerged victorious in a playoff match against Charles Russo of France. They had the same scores of ten-under
par after four rounds played and had to face each other in a mandatory playoff for only one to become the champion.
The Argentinean played brilliantly on the final day carding a round of four-under par, 67. He had five birdies and a lone bogey marked on his score card for the final round. This was his maiden victory playing on the European Challenge Tour and is looking
forward to continue his winning streak in the upcoming events. Estevez was delighted with the way he played during all the four days and was happy with his putting throughout.
The 26-year-old golfer had great stats after the tournament commenced. Estevez is going to get his European Tour card now because he marked a victory playing on this tour. He is confident that he will be able to cope with the pressure playing on the international
circuit against the best in Europe. Joaquin said in a statement, “I never dreamed of a finish like this, not even in my wildest dream.” He will be getting more exposure now playing on the international arena amongst the top golfers in Europe and Asia.
As for Russo, he was disappointed to miss the birdie putt on the first playoff hole. He carded a steady final round of two-under par, 69 but failed to manage the pressure situation. The Frenchman had a total four round score of ten-under par, 274. Russo
is an experienced player and has also been playing on the European circuit but it was his putter which let him down in the final playoff situation.
Local player, Diego Vanegas, finished third with a final round score of four-under par, 67. The Colombian had six birdies and two bogeys on his card. He finished the tournament with a total four day score of nine-under par, 275. The youngster once trailed
by a margin of a single stroke after finishing the 18th green and was slightly disappointed not to be in the playoff.
Nicolas Meitinger of Germany and the seasoned campaigner, Will Wilcox, were tied at the fourth spot. They had a score of eight-under par after the four rounds. Much was expected from Wilcox, who was the most experienced player on the field. He failed to
show his experience and managed a final round of two-over par, 73. The American was disappointed because he was among the contenders before the final round commenced.
Estevez picked up the championship trophy along with the winner’s cheque. He will now be competing on the all important European Tour.
