I plan on applying for the summer of 2009 for a job at Philmont, and am having a hard time picking between ranger, backcountry, and base camp (Which it said was common for 1st years anyway). Anyone have any advice?

  1. Having been to Philmont twice in the past ('83 + '85), it would be great to have a job there. Have you attended before? Do you know all that a backcountry assignment holds? It might be good to start at basecamp to see how the whole process works, but you might not have to. A ranger helps crews for a few days and then satisfied they will be OK, leaves for basecamp to be sent out again. Philmont would have all the job requirements and then you would be able to make your choice with more confidence. Yes, I have never worked there myself, but I remember all the wonderful staff that made it such a great experience. :)  Good luck and visit Kit Carson's house and the Villa Philmonte!
