I'm joining the Marine Corps next year. But if I were to get out after 4 years, would a job with the USPS be a good plan. Does it suck *** to work at the Post Office and how is your job, pay and beifits?

  1. "Lavadog" is close.  With the four years of military service, it's added on AFTER retirement.  You can retire from the USPS after 30 years of service, and that's the minimum.  To hire on, you must take a Civil Service Entrance Exam.  You are given preferential "points", because of military service, and depending on the score, are considered first in hiring, before the general public.   You can go online to www.usps.com for more info. about job opportunities.

  2. Well from what I know, it's hard to get in. It's a well payed job though.

  3. Mos 0161 Postal Clerk it would be easy and it would be easy to get on at the post office. I was in the Marines they will not give you a certain job but only a certain field. Look at at all the jobs in that field because you could get the worst one. You have to pick 01 personal-admin for the postal clerk job. But do what you want that would also tranfer to the real world. Not much of a need for tank drivers in the real world. Electronics, avaition, weather, intel. Those are all cool jobs. Stay away from 03 unless you love to run. Oh and for the record they do still hit you on parris island..despite the rules, and nobody says anything because its supposed to be hard I was hit therefore you will be hit. hoorah

  4. Veterans preference means you get points for being a veteran..After going through the hiring process they add up your total score..If you score within their requirements then you will be considered for employment..You have an advantage over a non veteran as soon as you apply.

And I know in the USPS if hired you get four years instantly towards your retirement..This means as soon as your hired you have four less years until retirement, but it does not count towards seniority or pay...Lets say it takes 25 years to retire ..then a veteran only needs to do 21 years to gain full retirement..Not bad huh..

Jobs differ in the USPS..you can carry mail, you can be a clerk, you can be a rural carrier, you can be in maintenance, and you can be in distribution..There are a good variety of jobs..Pay is decent, work is steady, benefits are great.
