  1. It generally depends on the place where you work.  Most mental health providers want their case managers to have at least a BA in social work or psychology.  A volunteer case management position or an internship in case management would be helpful.  The case manager needs to be able to work with all levels of associated workers: Doctors, Psychiatrists, clinical social workers and the consumers them-selves, the mentally ill.  Case managers need to be aware of places that provide services - anything from help filling out job applicaitons, SSI or welfare forms to finding clothing and furniture, food, etc.  Sometimes, case managers work closely with a team - you will not be alone in providing referrals for your clients.  AND OH YES - PAPERWORK!!!!  TELEPHONE CALLS!  NASTY SOCIAL SERVICE WORKERS.  CLIENTS WITH LIMITED UNDERSTANDING or LITERACY.  So, the two most important things case managers need is a willingness to help and PATIENCE, PATIENCE, PATIENCE!
