Question:

Job market in UK for teacher and healthcare assistant?

Hello,

My wife and I are thinking of continuing living abroad, this time in the UK. I'm wondering what the job market is like for a qualified teacher and a trained Healthcare Assistant? My wife is an EU national so visas are not a problem.

Also, any suggestions on locations that would have a good job market for us and a reasonable cost of living? (i.e. not London!)

Any advice would be appreciated!

  1. Hi, as a teacher myself, I can tell you that there are plenty of jobs available. However, this year in my school we had lots of overseas teachers, many of which were excellent and well qualified - the problem is that they get paid unqualified rates until they gain their Q.T.S (qualified teacher status) so it might be worth looking into that before taking a job, or soon after you get one.

EDIT: Lots of overseas teachers opt to do supply teaching - there is usually plenty of work for the good quality ones. (We regularly 'black-list' the ones that are very poor quality however). I can't help you much with choosing a location, as I am a Londoner myself, so that's really the area I know about.

  2. depends what sort of teacher ... teachers of secondary school (age 11-16) physics are very scarce, whereas if a secondary school advertises a vacancy for a teacher of English they will get loads of applicants

not sure what type of healthcare assistant you mean ... if you mean working for instance in a care home then there's lots of work but it's low paid

  3. Be careful, your qualifications might not be recognised here!!
