Three months ago I went to a temp agency and they got me the job I'm at now. I make $12.00/hr doing encoding, adjusting levels, and double checking commercials and trailers for broadcast quality. Now, this company is worth millions of doalls and is the leader in what they do. They said they wanted to hire me perminatly but wanted to know what they had to pay to do that. My question is how much should I ask for? I'm sure everyone around me makes at least 16-18/hr. I don't want to go to high. Suggestions please!!

  1. Usually, when excepting a permanent position, you can expect at least a 40% pay increase. The same as if you were going from hourly to salary. I woudl say 17 an hour would be resonable.

Besides, they don't know how much you currently make. Temp agencies invoice your wage with a percenatge on top of that. That is how they make their money.

I work in payables temp agencies charge anywhere from 40-60% more than what you make to the company you are working for.

  2. find out what they are paying the temp agency for you -

if you're getting $12.00/hr - my guess is the agency is getting about $18 - $20

if you can find out - then ask the same rate they are paying the temp agency - if not I'd start with the $18.00 and see what kind of reaction you get

  3. I would say something like "A pay rate in the range of $16-18 would be reasonable; depending on the benefits package".  That shows that you aren't stuck to a certain number, so it won't seem like a take-it-or-leave-it situation; and leaves room for you and the company to negotiate both pay and benefits.  Good luck!
