Question:

Job opportunities for Major in Social Work/Minor in Psychology?

I'm a 29 year old adult student majoring in Social Work, and considering a Minor in Psychology. I'm not sure what kinds of doors adding a Minor in Psychology would open for me, or if it would be worth my time and money. It was suggested by the college counselor that I could go this route, since I have great interest in Psychology, but she couldn't really tell me what types of employment opportunities would be available.

-What can be done with a Major in Social Work/Minor Psychology? I know the possibilities are endless, but I'd like to hear your suggestions.

-Is it worth my time and money adding the Minor in Psychology, will it open more doors for me, or would the degree in Social Work be adequate?

Thank you in advance for your help, all suggestions/ideas/comments welcome.

  1. I think a minor in Psychology will probably help open doors in that it will look good to potential employers. Also, if you're applying to a job that has a psychology aspect, they will definitely be more likely to hire you--jobs like: adoption service counselor, marriage/family therapist, drug/alcohol abuse counselor, crisis center director, correctional center/program counselor, family services specialist, court caseworker, guidance counselor, rehab specialist/counselor, etc...

...whereas if you apply for jobs without a psychological bent--like an urban planner, employment recruiter, corporate trainer, college administrator, etc., it won't necessarily help THAT much--though it still looks good, since it shows you have initiative.

  2. Could work in hospitals or corporations, etc.

  3. Can you think of ANYONE in any type of management position, who would be worse off for having studied psychology at some time in their life?  Besides, a social worker who does not really understand WHY people do what they do, is not a great asset to anyone.
