Question:

Jobs at the United Nations?

I've looked at the job availabilities at the United Nations and most of what I've seen require at least 2+ years experience. Are there positions for recent graduates with a degree in International Relations?

Or do you have to work for two years or internship at the UN during graduate school in order to get a job?

  1. Even if someone did get one of the rare internships at the UN, they would still need the two or more years of work experience before getting an actual job. What is it that you want to do? Depending on that, jobs might be easier to find. You may want to start off working for one of the UN organizations. There's a lot that can be done there for people with all types of experience. Try that out before you look at the jobs you've been looking at.

  2. I have no idea, but i'd like to follow the same path that you're pursuing at the moment.

  3. Jobs at the UN require a great deal of real world experience. They want people with degrees, but they also want people with actual work experience. Even a graduate degree won't help you unless you have a work experience.

An international relations degree is much too general for the UN. What is your area of specialization? What languages can you work in other than English? What jobs or volunteering experiences do you have relating to working with multi-cultural clients, working in insecure/hostile situations, or building the capacity of others to be able to do something that will allow them to manage their own business/department/institution?

This resource is actually for people who want to volunteer abroad, but a lot of the information is applicable to someone who would want to work for the UN:
