I have a 23 year old female friend that lives in the Philippines. She desires to work in the US. She is a high school graduate, but has little job experience since high school. She is attractive and hard working.

1. What is the best way for her to find a job in the US?

2. What types of jobs are typically available for someone like her, and what would the salary and benefits be?

Thanks

  1. First thing is first your friend has to make sure she is even able to get to the US legally. After that the sky is the limit on jobs. It's just up to her on how determined she is to get a good job. Anyone can do it.

  2. None..

She has to be a college graduate or finished a vocational course to qualify to apply for a working visa.. She has to be sponsored by the company hiring her... Or have an extraordinary talent in the entertainment business...

The least she can do is to get a diploma being a caregiver.. She can at least have a chance to apply for positions in senior homes or mentally handicapped..

  3. My wife is Filipina.  She has a college degree in Accounting from Lyceum Manila.  She's very smart, attractive and hard working, and speaks near perfect english.  She has plenty of experience in her field of study, outside US.  She's been in US for 2 years.  She's working as a cashier.  Not because there aren't any accounting jobs.  There are plenty.  People here treat her like she's deaf, stupid, and Mexican.  Her soft spoken and agreeable nature (typical Filipina) apparently are not characteristics employers look for.  It seems they prefer an obnoxious, fatazz, know-it-all with a GED.  I think your friend might find a job in the service sector fairly quickly but people here don't like anybody who looks remotely Spanish to be in a position higher than themselves.  We're going back to Philippines to live where she will get her CPA and people are more friendly to us.

  4. As you might know, the job market in the US has not been all that hot lately. People are getting laid off or are having their salaries reduced so that they will not be let go.

But anyway, someone said that one has to be assertive/obnoxious & speak with a loud booming voice which is great advice for any Filipina who typically is not that way. Some pretty weird people in the US do believe that these traits are desirable, don't ask me why.

    But to answer your qs.

    1. Have a company sponsor her, this is not easy for it will depend on her skills set.

    2. Don't get me wrong though, there are a lot of jobs available if you are not picky. Or if you are multi-lingual or if you belong to certain sectors/industries where the demand is still high.

Minimum salaries vary by State, starting salaries depends on the company/industry, benefits are pretty much the same for companies in the same sector.

  5. Dude, if she doesn't have a college degree she will be looking at $6.35 an hour at McDonald's or Walgreens or something.  Out of the $6.35 they will probably take out $2.45 for income tax withholding, fica and all of that other stuff leaving less than $4 or so per hour.  Figure in the cost of living in the US, and I think that a salary of $1 per hour with no deductions in the Philippines would provide at least the same lifestyle and she wouldn't have to be so far away from her family.

  6. i don't mean to discourage you but your friend has to get there first in the u.s. whatever ways (except illegal ofcourse).   with her qualification she can find low income jobs like baby sitting, etc.  otherwise hop in the bandwagon and be ready for the uphill battle.

  7. what ever they can provide her and what matches her skills as a worker. she still have to go to a lot of process. they want all proof of proper identification. and you do not have to add she is attractive its like your trying to expose her to the male dominants" hey she is attractive lets hire her ! " it does not sound good. lets put it this way the person who gets the job is less atractive & she does not how would you feel now? Unfair diba?

  8. CNA...Can she even come here ? Half the country is already here.

  9. A janitor or a job at McDonald's. Or a cashier at Walgreens.

  10. Jgirl... you are mean.  Filipinos are not like Mexicans... they can't just jump the border and go work at McDonalds.  They have to have a visa to get to America and they don't offer working visas for measley jobs like burger flippers!

Okay, so to answer the question... the best bet is for her to get a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or Physical Therapy.  After she gets a nursing degree, she can apply for US nursing certification by taking the NCLEX exams.  Then she can apply for a visa.  Best way is to go with a hiring agency specifically targetted at nurses or medical professionals.

By the way, LEGAL immigration requires more than just looks and effort... it requires SKILL.  And that's why illegal immigrants are getting lambasted out there.

  11. Aside from taking a college course that is very much in demand in the US, she needs the advice of someone good in immigration, like an immigration lawyer or one who is into legal manpower pooling sending various workers in the US.

For example: She can apply for a uniqe type of immigrant visa, like a unique skill of some sort, and that a US company is willing to hire her and sends the US embassy in the Phils. a certification on such.

This she can ask about from a US immigration expert.

I have a friend who made it that way.

Possibly too: An American citizen comes to her in the Phils. and marries her, making her eligible to go to the USA.

  12. I'm tired of hearing about all these bimbo uneducated filipinas who want to work in the US. Tell her to go to college and get a degree before expecting a good-paying job. Or she can just work as a janitor or at McDonalds- she should be thankful to get that job if she wants to come to the US!
