  1. To give you the non-sugar coated answer....its very difficult to get a start in Thailand. You can put your CV with all the agencies in BKK, you may or may not hear anything from them, if you want the names and contact details of some companies who recruit farangs drop me an email

Work Permit fees have just been increased so would think this will impact on the the number of farangs being employed to a certain degree, to the bigger companies not an issue but to smaller ones employing farangs may become an issue.

If you where in Oil & Gas with decent experience could have put you onto some very good contacts

  2. I own a business in Thailand with over 30 employees and have been here for years from America.

For every foreign expat work permit I want to issue, I have to hire 4 Thais. That is the law.

Over the past few years the amount of expat jobs has decreased to almost none. This is because of the political situation, the economy and a host of feelings that Thai Universities are churning out more educated students and that they should get first crack at the jobs.

Whereas I have one accountant with a Masters Degree that makes around US $900 per month, where would you find a westerner that would work for that little? Plus the fact they speak English and Thai, and know the Thai accounting system and laws here.

I dont advice teaching English unless you want to take a year off and see what life is like. I am sure for most, the lack of money takes it toll in the long run, because you have to get used to living with almost nothing.

Can always get married to a Thai is an option. Lots of men and women professional single Thai's.

The best option is starting your own business, however, this is near impossible because every business idea has already been tried here.

For example 7/11 Stores are on every corner. You can buy a 7/11 franchise and earn a good return except for one problem? This is Thailand and there are no such things as geographic territorial rights, so someone else can open a 7/11 or Lotus Express right next to your new store, throwing your projected business income all to h**l.

Every here wants to make money in a crazy way.

Without latching on to a MNC that would send you to Bangkok I would say your chances are limited to what I mentioned.

Millions of people want to work and live in Thailand.

It's a shame that honest people that want to work and have a family here have little to no opportunity to do so.

  3. "Business background" why not buy a bar ?

    Or a small business.

  4. WELL BETTER ASK TO KHUN BOB OR TOM YUNG NOON.THEY ARE THE BEST HERE.

  5. As others as mentioned Teaching is one option.  But it does require a degree.  Also in the future they are saying that teaching positions may require a Degree in Education and if not you must complete a course in teaching.  Teaching doesn't pay well,  The school my wife works at pays 30,000 baht a month.

  6. If just for few months maybe you can be dive instrutor? I think it is your best shot.

  7. The problem with working in Thailand is the work permits.

Companies need to employ 4 staff and pay tax on 2 million baht (about 60,000 aussie) for each foreigner employed.

The application takes anywhere from 2-12 months and is rarely offered to short term staff.

Most foreigners work illegally, which although common has risks and imposes limits on the work you can get (ie not in sight of authorities).

The most common industries are teaching english (need TEFL or similar) and scuba diving.

Other possibilities are bar or promotional work but these generally earn you a Thai wage (accommodation, food, drink and a bit of spending money if you are lucky!)
