I've heard a lot of stories about people going there.

Do you know anything about this or how to get information. Like available positions, places to stay or live, wages and salaries, etc?

Information will be appreciated :)

  1. You can get information on some of the jobs available through the federal government's job bank.  The second link is to information on living in Yukon Territory communities.

  2. The territorial civil service, especially Nunavut, and occasionally the NWT - never really hear anything about the Yukon - seem to be perpetually recruiting. And I know many an Atlantic Canadian who works in the Yellowknife or Iqaluit. There's a Newfoundlander who's been elected to the Nunavut legislature, to show how deep ACers penetrate up there. Think about it - there are lots of positions that require some degree of education and/or experience, neither of which they have in great supply up north (there's no northern university, ergo they have to ship in outsiders). Pay is quite good, but you're sacrificing your proximity to creature comforts for it. The cost of living can be quite high - food has to be shipped in, fuel costs an arm and a leg - but you get the Northern Living Allowance to offset that. You'd probably be looking at high five-figure/low six-figure salaries for civil service or teaching up there, depending on where you are, what you do, and your experience.

FYI, I've heard there are some strange rules governing the bar of the territories, I've been told. Experience working in the North doesn't transfer to the south, no reciprocity for members of the bar ... not sure of the truth of it since I've never looked into practicing in the territories, but if you're in the barristing/soliciting business, look into how it works.

  3. I'd try chamber of commerce for Yellowknife, Whitehorse, Iqualuit and Inuvik.

Frontenac is the contractor for North Warning Line.

Alaska Highway is perpetually under construction.

    Diamond and gold mining

    Petroleum exploration and exploitation.

Northern Stores run by NorthWest Company.

  4. i imagine the jobs up there would either be a job in mining, a scientific position or a military position.

i don't think there is much choice. obviously to get into a scientific position you need to be a scientist and know about what you may be researching etc. a military position would be at a northern base, that could include anything from being a pilot, mechanic, or even a cook, however i don't know how northern the bases are and if you can apply to be positioned in these bases (and of course this would be the Canadian military). and lastly, the mining-- I'm unsure as to how far north the mining is, and how easy it would be to get a job, but of course you would need prior knowledge about the subject.
