  1. So you don't want to do volunteer work, which would be upaid -- you want a paid job doing humanitarian work, yes?

Can you work in a language other than English? Do you have an area of expertise that would fill a critical need in Africa: building water and sanitation systems, developing and sustaining literacy programs, training others in health care, coordinating HIV/AIDS awareness programs, training others to use ICT tools as part of their jobs, teaching farmers about organic pest control measures, etc.?

If yes, you can find jobs at ReliefWeb

    http://www.reliefweb.int (click on vacancies)

If not, then you need to spend time gaining an area of expertise and the ability to work in another language. Expertise is what's needed in Africa -- they've already got plenty of people who have good hearts, but what they really need is the knowledge that will help them address their most critical concerns themselves.

  2. Start where you are. I'm sure there's plenty of things you can find to do. Home is always a good place to start. Helping the homeless, Food banks; working at schools.Working at a Church.
