Question:

Jobs with a degree in English

I'm a teacher and I'm sick of it. I hate having to face the students everyday , I simply detest the job and the hours of preparation (outside school hours) for the lessons . I want to have a completely different job. What else can I do with a BA degree in English? It seems that besides teaching there's nothing much one can do with a degree in English.

I'm still young and I don't want to waste any more time doing a job I hate. what do you think? thanks.

  1. Take a year off. Maybe you should take some time to put your priorities in order. Perhaps you can take on a bunch of jobs simultaneously and see which one you like the best.

You can't really do much with a bachelor's degree nowadays since EVERYONE seems to have one. Maybe you should consider graduate school and get your master's. Hope I've helped.

  2. first, you have to write down exactly why you hate your current job and make sure that any other job you want to go to DOES NOT HAVE those same things.

  3. You can wait tables!

Try for an editing job.  Go back to school and add to your degree.  Do anything, just don't stay in the field and make other people miserable just because you are.

  4. You can get into proofreading.

If you are a little creative, get into Copywriting...the job of writing ad copy. Creative Directors can kill to get a copywriter who can write an error free copy. There is content writing too.

You can become a writer. Write stories / novels and stuff.

Or if you like, get into a magazine and become a reporter / column writer.

Get into a call centre job. They would ask for no qualification.

    Become a script writer.

Become a blogger. Matter of fact you can earn from home with websites like getafreelancer.com etc, etc.

  5. You have a valuable degree. The question you need to ask is what do you want to do? There are a range of options available to you, it really depends on what interests you and where your particular skills are. (perhaps Journalism? Editing? some sort of office/clerical thing?)

Oh, and definitely get out of teaching. Now. For your sake and for the sake of the kids.

  6. Journelism

Or you could do a short business/ICT course and enter into a big corporation

    good luck

  7. As a former English teacher, I do know what you mean.  There are hundreds of things you can do.  In my case, I've been a translator, a Naval Intelligence Officer, a Director of Administration, a Director of Finance,  a Director of HR, a Business Manager and a wedding officiant.

  8. Good luck.  My sister in law has a degree in English and she is an events coordinator for the nuclear transport council.  She doesn't do anything that has to do with English.  My friend also has the degree and he is a waiter.

Go back to school and get a science degree.  Then your opportunities will be limitless.
