Jochen Schuemann, Sebastian Col lead Audi Sailing Team to coastal race win: Sardinia Region Trophy
Fourth day of 2011 Region of Sardinia Trophy proved to be another successful day for Jochen Schuemann and Sebastian Col, as they led Audi Sailing Team Powered by All4One towards coastal race victory
at the Gulf of Cagliari. The Franco-German sailing team has retained their top position after the fourth day’s race with 18.5 points.
Audi Sailing Team Powered is likely to grab the title of Sardinia Region Trophy 2011 which is the third of five regattas of 2011 Audi MedCup Circuit. The team wasn't that impressive in the first two
races, but after that they changed their sailing strategy under the strong leadership of Jochen Schuemann and superb tactics of Sebastian Col, the results spoke volumes about their decisions.
The weather conditions of the Cagliari Gulf changed a bit on the second day, as the winds gusted below 15 knots. However, on the third and fourth day, they increased to over 25 knots, approximately
around 23 to 28 knots, which created problems for the sailors. Despite these testing conditions however, Audi Sailing team held its own and won the 25-mile high-scoring coastal race.
While talking to the local media, Jochen Schuemann said, “It was a tough race, and, I think, a well deserved win. We found some boat speed in the heavier airs and we are definitely not slower than
the competition when it is windy, if anything a little faster upwind, which is a good sign as that was part of our struggle after the first three events.”
Col added, “In general we like coastal races, and sailing here in Cagliari is a real pleasure The race's been very interesting because Ed Baird and the guys of Quantum have been pushing us so hard
throughout the whole course.”
