Definitely shorts! I biked for years without them, because I didn't like the look, but once I got them I would never go back. They are just too comfortable.

The previous guy is correct that you don't want to wear anything under them. If your son gets any chafing, you can get some cream to alleviate it.

Cycling shorts are designed for cycling.   Go with that.  

I'm not in the mood for a long explanation this morning.  Contrary to what non-cyclists think, cycling clothing is all about function.  

P.S.  SOP is to go commando under the bike shorts.....  Seriously.

Didn't you already ask this question??  Again, buy cycling shorts for him.  A jock strap is for protecting the package from soccer balls, baseballs, etc.  It will do no good on a bike where padding between the rider and the seat is the important issue.

cycling shorts!  cycling shorts are padded in the seat, so protect him from his saddle. the chamois material wicks moisture. they're fitted to the rider, so protect against chaffing. spandex actually helps to ease muscle fatigue. and the list goes on. the jock strap just holds his twig and berries..
