Question:

Jodphurs or breeches?

I'm a pretty beginner rider, just having lessons for about 3-4 years, but I'm at the level where I need to ride in something other than jeans. Everytime I ride (once a week, usually) I get nasty sores on the insides of my knees from my jeans, and I'd like them to stop. I know this is because of my jeans, so I'm trying to convince my mom to buy me jodphurs or breeches.

So what I'm wondering is what's the difference between the two, and what do people prefer? My riding boots are short, and they're ariats, if that's any help.

  1. You can see on these websites, but I am pretty sure they are the same thing.

  2. Well, jodphurs are really for littler kids, you know, who still wear gaurders? Do you have half chaps? Because if you do, breeches are the way to go. Breeches have ankle closures so you really need to have chaps or tall boots if you are going to wear them. I personally fin breeches easier to get on and off.

Well, good luck in your riding pant-shopping

  3. I don't ride english but I can tell you that it's probably got less to do with your pants, likely more to do with your saddle and you only riding once a week.  Your skin just hasn't had a chance to get tough yet.  My daughter had a saddle...which wasn't built right and it literally ate her inside legs up, even though she rode every day.  The tree turned out to be crooked.  I bought her a new saddle and there were no more problems.  Hope that helps.

  4. jodphurs, breeches r 4 tall boots, jodphurs have straps at the bottonm usually that u put under the heel of ur boot

  5. If you have paddock boots get a pair of half chaps. You can get them fairly cheaply, don't need to wash them and usually last a while.

  6. Depends on how old you are. Really, either will do. Jodphurs are usually for children (13 and under), and can be worn with your ariat boots. They have a strap on the bottom which you can fasten under your boot to keep your jod from riding up.

Breeches can be worn with tall  boots or with paddock boots and half chaps.

I recommend breeches with half chaps, the half chaps will give you a bit more grip when riding.

  7. i personaly only ride in breeches when i wear my tall show boots because they only come up to midcalf. i suppose you could get them and wear half chaps, ive never done it because it sounds a little uncomfertable lol. i love half chaps though but i wear them with jeans, its absolutely amazing. you could even try jods with hald chaps for a comfertable polished look.

    hope i could help!

  8. Well, if you are not totally confused now....

The most correct and easy to understand answer

was given by the one which should be above mine or does not have a name.

I would say to ask someone where you ride..but being that they allowed you to ride in jeans for 3-4 years, makes me question their "professionalism"  and I am surprised that after a few lessons and your continuing interest hadn't required or suggested that you ride in something other than jeans.  Have you asked them..or seen other riders dressed in appropriate attire there?  With 3-4 years of riding under your belt, I would think you would be considered more than a beginner!!

Nonetheless...you should get proper attire..the jods or breeches will have a patch on the inside of the leg that will prevent you from chafing or getting rubbed raw like the seam in jeans.  So, in essence, any stretchy pant without an inside side seam would do with half chaps and your ariats.  But invest in a pair of the real mCcoy!!

I don't know where you live but I would suggest visiting a tack store and seeing what your options are as far as fabrics, low rise, higher traditional rise, full seat, etc. and various half chaps which will need to be sized depending upon the size of you calves..both length and width.  They also have options.

Here is a link to a site that has a variety of clothing for you to look at, and decent prices..although I think until you are fitted....you should go to a local place.

But at least you can become familiar with some of the options.

And, I promise you once in proper attire...you won't feel like a beginner anymore!!

    Happy Shopping!!!

  9. Jodphurs and breeches ARE different...as explained by Three Legged Moose.

I also wanted to offer up the idea that there are such things as "riding jeans" if you prefer riding in jeans (I do, I can't stand breeches/jods).  They are usually made of stretchy denim and don't have seams on the insides of the legs so they don't rub.

You can also get english style chaps that just go over your regular jeans and that will cut down on rubbing a LOT.

  10. I have always worn jodhs. In fact the only people I know who wear breeches are those who compete at high levels. I'm in the UK so possibly it's looked at differently in the States (?) I also wear half chaps as they protect the lower leg from injury of varying sorts ( I hack a lot so there are trees etc)  You would need long boots if you got breeches.

  11. i think they are the same thing just different names but i get breeches and jodpurs

  12. jodphurs go with short boot and (if you want) half chaps

    breeches go with tall boots

yes there is a difference... yes you can wear breeches with short boots and half chaps but they werent made for short boots alone... they are also cut differently in the hips usually higher for breeches and shorter for jods...

    hope it helped!

    :)

  13. Breeches are for anyone older than 10 or 11. I'd get breeches & a pair of half-chaps if I were you- you'll be amazed how much better your leg will be!

Only get the jods if you can't get half-chaps, they're meant to be worn with paddock boots. Breeches are supposed to be worn under tall boots or half-chaps.

  14. They're the same thing . You might of got sores from the seam on your jeans but also if you have short riding boots the saddle can rub on your legs and so you may need to buy some chaps to =]

  15. breaches work for tall boots & short boots W/ chaps

    jods - short boots only

  16. Normally younger riders use jodpurs.   I would get breeches.  They are longer then jodpurs that is the difference.  If your mom doesn't want to pay $100 for a pair, try getting some half chaps.  They work just about as good.   If I use those I can ride in jeans just fine, other wise I get sores and bruises too!
