Joe Burns’ magnificent ton rescues Queensland against South Australia in Sheffield Shield
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Australia-c844 (SA) on the opening day of a Sheffield Shield match at the Adelaide Oval.
Burns resumed the innings for his team alongside http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Chris-Hartley-c1243 after tea on the first day. Queensland were 213 for the loss of five wickets at tea with Burns unbeaten on 76. The wicket had some juice in it in the first hour of play, but it had eased out
as the match progressed.
Wicketkeeper batsman Hartley looked solid for his 15 runs but was unfortunate to be run-out, courtesy some good fielding from Daniel Harris. His wicket was followed by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Michael-Neser-c1960, who failed to open his account, and had to take a long walk back to the
pavilion.
With seven wickets down for just 241 runs, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Chris-Swan-c1252. The pair constructed a 51-run partnership for the eighth wicket
and took their total closer to 300. However, Swan failed to capitalise on the start he got and was dismissed for a run-a-ball 37.
Burns started playing some aggressive strokes and helped his team get close to the 350-run mark in their first innings. He played brilliantly and remained unbeaten on 140 from 237 balls. He struck ten 4’s and two massive 6’s in his innings.
He came to the crease at a time when his team was struggling at 11 for three, but he put together a match saving partnership with his captain James Hopes, and carried on to make a superb century. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kane-Richardson-c1765 was exceptional with the ball as the debutant
took four wickets for his team. He got good support from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Daniel-Christian-c1308, who grabbed two wickets in the innings for SA.
SA openers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Smith-c1654 had to come out and bat for a few overs. Their priority was to survive the day and then carry on tomorrow. The pair managed to negotiate the overs today without losing any wicket.
At the close of play, both Harris and Christian were unbeaten on 4 and 3 respectively. They will be looking forward to providing a strong start to the middle-order batsmen in order to get a good first innings lead over Queensland.
Although Queensland will be quite happy with their performance on the day, they would have liked to get at least one wicket by the close of play. However, they will be geared-up to do well tomorrow. The first session of play will be crucial for both teams
and it may decide the outcome of the match.
