Question:

Joe Calzaghe officially a coward now?

Now that he has chose to fight Roy Jones Jr. instead of Kelly Pavlik will his fans admit he is a coward? Calzaghe said this will be his last fight as well, so there is no chance of him fighting Kelly Pavlik. Will you Calzaghe nut huggers admit he is a coward and has never had a true fight to test him?

  1. Don't be so quick to count Jones out- if this fight is not fixed for Calzaghe, I think Roy dominates this fight and maybe even knocks Joe out!.......................................

If Hopkins could repeatedly hit Calzaghe with big lead right hands that had average speed on them....................................

What is a still lightning fast Jones going to do to the poorly defensed Calzaghe!..................................

And remember Calzaghe couldn't hurt a fly with his punches- HE HAS ZERO POWER!- SO JONES DOESN'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THAT!

  2. No-one that steps into the ring in a pro fight is a coward, and certainly not the guys  that do it at the top level.  I think daddy Calz saw enough when Pav dismantled Locket.  They know that there's no way they could beat Pav, so what's the point in getting beaten by him when you can take the safe route and keep the undefeated record intact?

Oddly enough, I imagine if Pav let Lockett beat on him some and score a knockdown before winning the fight, I think we'd have seen Pav-Calz.  But as it stands, there really is no reason for this fight, it's obvious that Pav is much, much better.

  3. no i believe he choose the harder opponent in Jones. Pavlik has youth over Jones but stands and trades a lot more than Jones by habbit, that's the way he fights and that wont work against Calzaghe because he doesn't stop throwing punches for long enough to get anything going that's how hes undefeated for over 10 years that's not luck. Calzaghe has beaten lots of good fighters with Pavliks style with ease but his toughest fights have all been against fighters with a good  counter punch that's how you beat Calzaghe because you use their punch to set up your own and their guard is open when the counter lands and the shot you didn't expect is the one that gets you. Calzaghe also has bad footing when chasing opponents and Jones has better ring craft than Pavlik and much more experience I'm not saying Jones is the better fighter than pavlik but styles make fights and Jones is harder to figure out than Pavlik and is not as one dimensional  so i think he'd be better off fighting Pavlik and I'm sure the pays better fighting Jones as hes by far the bigger name. So if Jones back peddles bringing Calzaghe forward throwing punches then Jones will have Calzaghe off balance and open for the counter and may cause an upset

  4. Joe Calzaghe is not a coward at all...and i'm not sure about the whole "never had a true fight to test him" statement either. People were hailing Jeff Lacy as the next big thing in that weight division and then Calzaghe worked him over. Then people were saying Bernard was going to give him a boxing lesson...didnt happen. He beat Kessler...who I think would beat ANYONE in the Middleweight and most of the light heavy's not named Calzaghe. I am by no means a Joe Calzaghe "fan" but I can tell a good fighter when I see one.

    **To the poster below me**

The key word in your last sentence is PROBABLY knock him out right now. I know about 50 people who could PROBABLY have knocked out Ali but didnt. You're opinion is a fair one though, I have no problems accepting your points and I respect your boxing knowledge...but your last sentence isnt a fair one.

  5. To to the poster above, not everybody gave Hopkins a chance at beating Calzaghe, many immediatley counted him out because of his age. As far as Jeff Lacy is concerned, as far as I can recall, most people said Lacy would be a step up for Calzaghe, but few said he would actually beat him. I lost a lot of respect for Calzaghe when he took Jones over Pavlik. Pavlik is the undisputed middleweight champ. If Calzaghe was a true champ, he would fight the best, not someone who used to be the best. Pavlik is currently one of the top 10 best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, Jones fell off that list years ago. If you felt like you were the best, wouldn't you go after Pavlik? Calzaghe is a good fighter, and I stress the word "good." But just face it, Calzaghe is no way  deserving of all the hype that he gets, because I can name about 5 fighters who can probably knock him out right now.
