Joe Calzaghe praises prospect George Groves
If Joe Calzaghe’s undefeated boxing record says anything about his knowledge of the sport, we should respect his recent appraisal of British prospect George Groves (10-0, 8 KOs).
Calzaghe had the opportunity to see Groves train after appearing in London primarily to see David Haye spar in preparation for his forthcoming bout with Audley Harrison on November 13.
While impressed with Haye, Calzaghe also praised Groves acutely, saying, “I watched George on the pads and he impressed me a lot. He's very sharp, quick and seems to have every shot in the book. He's only going to get better, too, as he's surrounded by other
good fighters in the gym. Success breeds success. He's definitely someone to keep an eye on in my old weight division.”
Groves is promoted by Hayemaker Promotions, operated by WBA titlist David Haye and manager Adam Booth.
He recently declined a Frank Warren offer to fight fellow prospect James 'Chunky' DeGale at Warren’s upcoming mega-card in celebration of his 30 years as a British boxing promoter.
Calzaghe, 38, retired undefeated after beating the likes of fighters such as Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr. He insists he will not return to the sport, though remains an avid supporter.
"It takes a lot of time, dedication and patience to reign for a decade, and I'm proud of what I achieved in the sport," Calzaghe admitted. "George is right at the beginning of his journey now and he's still growing as a fighter. He seems hungry to prove
himself and doesn't want to be held back. That's a good attitude to have at this point. So long as he gets the right fights at the right time, and continues to learn as he goes, his talent will take him all the way. He's a stand-out prospect in the division
and I'm excited to see how he progresses in the coming years."
Groves looks to make his first defence of his Commonwealth super middleweight title on October 30.
