Joe Calzaghe says Antonio Tarver wants to fight him only for a big payday – Boxing news
Welsh boxing veteran Joe Calzaghe has responded to Antonio Tarver’s recent statements and said that Tarver only wants to fight him for a big payday.
The Pride of Wales, Joe Calzaghe, is a former WBO, WBA, WBA, IBF, The Ring Magazine & British Super Middleweight Champion and The Ring Light Heavyweight Champion. Tarver has recently been asking Calzaghe to return to the ring.
The current International Boxing Organisation cruiserweight champion and the former Ring Magazine, IBF, WBC, WBA and IBO light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver is still active at the age of 42. Moreover, the great American warrior, Tarver, who has won
29 of his 35 professional fights, in which 20 of his wins came by the way of a knockout, recently defeated the Canadian, Danny Green.
Therefore, Tarver wants the 39-year-old Welsh pugilist, Calzaghe, to return to the ring once again as the American believes he could have beaten Calzaghe.
The undefeated Calzaghe, who announced his retirement on February 5, 2011, holds an incredible record of winning all of his 46 professional fights, with 32 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout. Tarver reckons Calzaghe holds an unbeaten record because
he never fought him.
“I was the only one that could beat him, that’s why he avoided me,” Tarver said. “He got dropped by Roy (Jones) and (Bernard) Hopkins, I would’ve knocked out feather punching Joe Calzaghe. He couldn’t beat me period and I hate I
didn’t get a chance to prove it.”
However Calzaghe, who is the longest-reigning world champion in recent years, thinks Tarver is calling him out just to make a big payday for himself.
“I get it, it’s all about money and a payday,” said Calzaghe.
Calzaghe in the end explained why he did not fight Tarver. He said he wanted to fight the winner of the Antonio Tarver vs. Bernard Hopkins fight and since Hopkins won the bout, he fought him.
He said, “The truth is I was fighting the winner of you and Bernard Hopkins and you lost! For the record, I would have kicked your ...!”
Calzaghe still has no plans to return to the ring but let’s see if he changes his mind and comes back as people would love to see the great boxer in action once again.
