Joe Cole claims Liverpool will challenge for the title
After securing a free transfer to Liverpool from English Champions Chelsea, it seems Joe Cole has been speaking about how Liverpool are the biggest club in England and could actually challenge for the league title in the upcoming Premier League season.
It seems that Joe Cole has forgotten the fact that Liverpool were lucky to finish seventh in the league last season, were eliminated in the first round of the Champions League and failed to do well in any competition at all.
Every year before the league starts, Liverpool fans are convinced by the players and the management that the League title is a realistic achievement despite them not winning the title in all of Premier League’s history.
Joe Cole has claimed that after transferring from a club like Chelsea, where the aim every year was to win every competition they entered, Liverpool will be looking to do the same because of how the club used to perform over two decades ago.
The logic behind such a claim should be questioned since at this moment finishing fourth ahead of teams like Manchester City and Tottenham would in itself be a big achievement, something Liverpool failed to do last year and such statements only lead to disappointment for the fans who are deluded into believing they will be winning league titles every year.
Joe Cole, who has struggled to stay fit for an entire season for a while now, believes he will be able to get back to his old self once he gets a run of games under his belt. With Liverpool’s squad in the state it is in, it shouldn’t be difficult for Joe Cole to find a starting role in most, if not all, league games provided he stays fit.
At 28 years of age, the Englishman should theoretically be at the peak of his career but over the last years due to injuries and a loss of form, he seems to have regressed. This was critical to Chelsea’s decision to let him leave on a free transfer, along with his high wage demands, and the decision of Liverpool to take him is a huge risk, which Roy Hodgson will be hoping pays off.
Following the signing of Cole, star players Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres have made statements committing their futures to the club. It looks like defensive midfielder, Javier Mascherano, will be on his way out of the club, following Rafa Benitez to Inter Milan.
If Joe Cole remains fit, he will improve the Liverpool side but they have lost an important player in Yossi Benayoun, who has moved to Chelsea. Benayoun scored a number of important goals which helped Liverpool finish seventh after a season of poor performances, including that of Liverpool Captain Steven Gerrard.
Striker Fernando Torres has a notoriously bad record when it comes to injuries and the wisdom behind adding yet another injury prone player to the squad with very high wages is difficult to understand. After leaving Champions League football with Chelsea, Joe seems to be trying really hard to convince the world that he moved for footballing reasons. However, he seems to have over-done it by claiming Liverpool are targeting the league title.
