Joe Cole set to make Liverpool return, Glen Johnson satisfied with recent results
Liverpool FC midfielder Joe Cole is ready to make his return to 1st team action after being sidelined for a month due to a hamstring injury. Cole is expected to feature in Sunday’s crunch tie in the
English Premier League, when Liverpool travel to White Hart Lane to face Tottenham Hotspur.
The England international missed the last four Premier League fixtures due to injury, including a 2-0 home win over his former club Chelsea.
Manager Roy Hodgson said, “We hoped he would be back to face West Ham, but it has taken that little bit longer. Joe is not that far away really, so hopefully he will have recovered in time for Tottenham. Hamstring injuries are
tricky and I'm afraid we can only rely on what the sports science people tell us, and if they say he needs more time we just have to wait.”
The Reds managed to score just 6 points off their opening 8 matches, their worst start to a season since 1953; however, recent results have been in Liverpool’s favour and they are just 6 points behind 4th placed Manchester
City, who occupy the final UEFA Champions League qualification position.
Meanwhile, Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson is pleased with his side’s recent performances that see the club spring up to 9th place in the rankings. The Reds suffered a poor start to the season and were fighting relegation,
only a few games back.
Johnson is surprised that Liverpool are within touching distance of the top four after a dismal start to their campaign.
Saturday's 3-0 win over West Ham United was a confidence booster for the side and the English defender believes the Merseysiders can further improve their position.
He said, “We are still quite close to the top and if we can build on this performance then I'm sure we can be close to where we want to be. It surprises me that this win has taken us to within sight of fourth place. Considering
some of the points we have dropped, you'd have thought we would be out of it already, to be honest, but we're in there. Everyone's beating everyone at the moment and the league's really open. That means if we can put a run together we can get up there where
we aim to be."
The Reds will face a tough opposition in Spurs this weekend, who beat Arsenal last week at The Emirates in the north-London derby.
