Joe Daley bags his first major title at Constellation Senior Players Championship
Joe Daley carded a two-under par 68 in the final round of the Constellation Senior Players Championship to record a two-stroke victory over Tom Lehman, on Sunday, July 1, 2012.
Daley started off well on the front nine of the course with a birdie on the second hole. However, a bogey on the par-three sixth hole took him back to even par for the round.
Thereafter, a couple of consecutive birdies on the 9th and 10th hole allowed him to take the lead early in the round.
Overall, he recorded a total of four birdies against two bogeys to register the third Web.com Tour victory of his career.
"All I was keying on was what I had next, with the best possible attitude and keeping my emotions under control," Daley said. "I had a little adrenaline going later in the round and I dealt with it pretty good, so here I am".
With this win, Daley earned a total of $405,000 as prize money, which was more than twice the prize money that he earned in 59 PGA Tour starts from1994 to 2007.
He was not enjoying the best of his form in the past few months, as he recorded only one top-10 finish in the last 10 events that he played.
This time, he played amazingly well and hit 43 of 56 fairways at the Fox Chapel Golf Club in Pittsburgh.
"I thought he might get a little shaky in the back, but he was solid. ..." said Calcavecchia, who shared the lead while entering the final round of the tournament. "He deserves it. He's been at this a long time, and this is a huge win for him".
In the meantime, Lehman was looking forward to winning the second consecutive Champions Tour major victory of his career. He took the Regions Traditions title home in his previous start.
This time, he faltered in the final moments and carded three bogeys over the final six holes of the day. According to him, he did not play badly in the final round. In fact, he just made a bad finish to the competition that cost him a victory in the end.
