Joe Gibbs Racing team driver of car no. 11 Toyota Camry, Denny Hamlin won the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race, Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 held at the Michigan International Speedway on Sunday.
At long last, Hamlin outperformed runner up Matt Kenseth to score his season’s maiden victory.
Hamlin said, “We finished -- that's the thing. We got it done. Everyone knows that we've been strong. Today we didn't look as strong as what we normally do here, but we got it working there at the end.”
Hamlin was able to avoid incidents at a track where he struggled in past and left the races winless. The JGR driver Hamlin earned the 17th win in his Sprint Cup career. He led Matt Kenseth with 0.281 seconds to the finish line.
Denny Hamlin performed well at Martinsville, Richmond and Pocono in early race sessions, but failed to maintain the pace to the final part of the race. He was hampered by various problems on those occasions.
Hamlin further added, “We made a magic adjustment, and the car took off. This is the point of the season where we really need to start hitting our stride, and hopefully we've got another good 10 weeks before the Chase starts.”
Denny Hamlin got lucky with the last caution held in the race on lap 192. He was able to complete his last pit stop ahead of others. Hamlin returned on the track leading the drivers pack. The caution was raised on lap 195 with Denny Hamlin being chased by
Matt Kenseth. In the final laps after the last caution Hamlin’s car no. 11 Toyota was performing to the mark for a successful finish.
The recent newsmaker, JGR team driver Kyle Busch made the finish line in third place, just like he did at the Pocono race weekend. Paul Menard finished fourth at Michigan scoring his best result of the season.
The NASCAR championship leader Carl Edwards was fifth to cross the finish line, which also increased his championship lead to 20 points over Kevin Harvick, who finished 14th at Michigan.
