Joe Gibbs Racing facing problems at Michigan International Speedway – NASCAR news
Joe Gibbs Racing and team’s driver Joey Logano faced a mandatory issue while practicing for Sunday’s Sprint Cup Series race Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 which is due to be held at the Michigan International Speedway.
The JGR team was summoned by the NASCAR officials to deposit the oil pans used for team cars. The action was taken after the JGR team failed to submit the oil pans for pre-event inspection and approval.
All three drivers Joey Logano, Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch cars were stopped after the officials seized the oil pans used by them. The conditions got even worse for the team no. 20 Toyota, pilot Joey Logano. The car no. 20 Toyota started to smoke with just
three laps down during the final practice session of the day.
It seemed that an engine bearing has caused the trouble to the power plant failure. Unfortunately, the crew had to pull back the car into garage for a power unit change. It was the second time in a single day that the crew had to remove the engine from the
car.
Joey Logano was not able to restart the practice session but has a chance to get aboard Denny Hamlin’s car no. 11 to get a feel of the track and expected situation for Sunday’s race. After Logano’s incident he will start Sprint Cup Series race from the rear
end of the grid.
Along with JGR, other team garages were also experiencing issues with practice runs. Jeff Burton aboard his Chevrolet got in contact with David Ragan’s no. 6 Ford. In the contact between two cars, Burton damaged his rear bumper’s left side.
Burton said, “We just got really loose, and got loose in front of him. He didn't see me loose. I think he had on fairly new tires and was coming pretty quick. He didn't get checked up. It's typical for our year. Anything that can go wrong, it pretty much
will right now.”
Both cars made contact at turn four, after which Ragan’s Ford was also damaged from front the right side.
