Joe Gibbs Racing penalised after failing to comply with oil pan rule – NASCAR news
NASCAR team Joe Gibbs Racing team has been penalised for failing to comply with the oil pan rule.
JD Gibbs said, “For us, the oil pan thing ultimately was our responsibility to get - when it says things approved by NASCAR, every piece has to be approved by NASCAR.”
Gibbs added, “A lot of times we bring stuff to the track. They'll say, Hey, run it this week, don't bring it back, make these changes to it. Our fault was thinking we would have that conversation. When we got (to the track), they didn't like it. I think
they thought it was a different issue than it actually wound up being.”
Joe Gibbs Racing team runs three cars in NASCAR Sprint Cup Series- car no. 11 Denny Hamlin, car no. 18 Kyle Busch and car no. 20 Joey Logano.
The problem took place when all the JGR Toyota Camry cars were found with inappropriate oil pans. The NASCAR officials ordered to replace the parts before the cars could hit the track for practice at Michigan.
Complying with the rules, the JGR team changed the oil pans on all three of their cars, but the problem remained as the new oil pans were fitted uninspected. The oils pans confiscation barred all three JGR cars from practice and the team was later handed
a penalty.
Due to the violation of NASCAR regulations, the JGR team has been put on a probation period along with a hefty fine for all the three crew chiefs. JGR crew chiefs, Mike Ford for car no.11, Dave Rogers for car no. 18 and Greg Zipadelli for car no. 20 have
been fined $50,000 each along with probation until the end of the 2011 season.
All the three car chiefs Chris Gillin, Wesley Sherrill and Jason Shapiro including the Senior Vice President of Racing Operations Jimmy Makar have also been put on probation.
