Joe Girardi and Brian Cashman looking up to C.C. Sabathia – MLB News
On Friday night, New York Yankees ace C.C. Sabathia became only the ninth pitchers in New York Yankees history to make four straight Opening Day starts. Yankees ace has given some sensational results since joining the club three years ago.
It was largely down to his consistent efforts that the Yankees made it to the playoffs last season. The big left hander will be looking to make the most of available opportunities this season to help his team win the World Series finals.
Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi and General Manager Brian Cashman will be very pleased with Sabathia’s performances during his time with the club. In his three years tenure with the Yankees, Sabathia has earned an incredible 59-23 win-loss record with a great
ERA.
Sabathia could have easily won the American League Player of the Year Award last season, had Tigers’ ace Justin Verlander not been as consistent as he was. The guy has thrown 705 innings over the last three years, suggesting that not only is he talented
but also reliable.
“You’re looking at a consistent winner year in and year out, a guy that takes the ball and gives you a great chance to win every time he goes out there,” Joe Girardi said. “You can probably figure a starting pitcher is going to have his ‘A’ stuff about half
the time of his starts, but he finds a way to keep it always close when he doesn’t have his ‘A’ stuff. That’s what makes him so great to me is what he does in those other 16 or 17 starts.”
Sabathia looked a bit out of sorts earlier in the Spring Training this season, going for 5.00 ERA in his five official Grapefruit League starts. However, considering the weapons he has in arsenal, Sabathia is expected to bounce back strongly in the regular
season.
The Yankees have tried several starters in their rotation for the past few years but none of them has proved as efficient as Sabathia. When Brian Cashman signed him on for seven year deal in 2008 that’s exactly what he was hoping for.
