Joe Girardi explains the Yankees’ slump in ALCS Game 6
The New York Yankees were going up against the Texas Rangers in the 6th American League championship (ALCS) match and it was a very important encounter for the East Division contenders. They were lagging behind in the wins and with a tally of
2 – 3; they needed to win the next two fixtures to progress through to the World Series. Unfortunately, that wasn’t to be the case as the side went out of the ALCS with the score line at 6 – 1.
Manager, Joe Girardi was present at the end of the match to give his view on the mindset of the players and he commented on the loss by saying “Yeah, we didn't accomplish what we set out to. And as I told my guys, this hurts. I've been through it as a player.
I've been through it as a coach and now I've been through it as a manager. It's not a lot of fun watching other teams celebrate. They beat us. They out‑hit us, they out‑pitched us, out‑played us and they beat us.”
The Yankees were hoping to bag the match and get ready for their encounter against Cliff Lee in game 7. The Rangers were too strong and with Carsten Charles Sabathia in the bullpen, it looked like the goal could have been achieved but the strength of the
Texans on the forefront was strong and cunningly focused on getting the job done. Even though Josh Hamilton was the batter, Yankees walked on every occasion, the batting line was too strong for the side.
Girardi went on to explain the dilemma in his own words. “Well, we talked about how good their line up is. It worked a couple of times, and then it didn't work after that. I mean, Vlad Guerrero is no walk in the park, that's for sure. And we know how good
of a hitter he is, and that's why you talk about, well, why don't you just walk this guy? Well, their line up is complete, and that's what makes it so hard.”
On Colby Lewis, Joe remarked that the Rangers’ pitcher was the aiding man in the opponents’ quest to quell the New Yorker’s threat. His influence etched at the Yank’s offence.
