Joe Girardi not angry with Carsten Charles Sabathia – MLB Update
A war between Carsten Charles Sabathia and Justin Verlander ended with the dominating win of Verlander in the third outing of the five playoffs games between the clubs. However, the Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi did not blame Sabathia of helping the Tigers
in getting a crucial 2-1 lead in the American League Division Series at Comerica Park in Michigan on Monday, October 3.
Girardi was aware the margin of error was meagre for both the starters and the batters were landing with the no-mercy rule. As Sabathia started off solid and led the Yankees until third inning, Girardi provided support to his starter with some words of praise,
despite having gone under tons of pressure.
"I actually thought he made a lot of good pitches tonight, and I thought the zone was a small zone tonight," Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said. "No disrespect to anyone, but that's what I thought. That's what I saw."
Yankees’ batting provided Sabathia a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning which he defended strongly in the first two innings. He was looking at his best and at that time, the Yankees spectators were sure of his win for a comeback in the exciting series.
However, a sudden stumbling performance in the bottom of the third inning, made fans and the Yankees’ camp a little worried.
Sabathia gave away two runs in the third inning, but the real trouble for the club was his inconsistent pitching. He walked six batters over the span of just over five innings. Sabathia also gave the Tigers a go ahead single in the bottom of the fifth and
then allowed another run in the bottom of the sixth, to help Detroit advance 4-2.
Although Girardi backed Sabathia up strongly saying some appreciated words, the left-handed 31-year-old veteran hurler acted like a star player and accepted his fault.
"I'm not here to make excuses or anything like that," Sabathia said. "They did a good job of battling and they put some good at-bats together, and they ended up scoring some runs."
There was also a controversy over a decision that home-plate umpire Gerry Davis made while Sabathia was tossing. Sabathia argued two or three times during the game but he refused to discuss the problem with the media. He merely regarded it as an umpire’s
fault.
Eliminating today’s result, Girardi and the Yankees’ bullpen will now have to think seriously to perform their best in the next game as it will be a do-or-die outing for them.
