Joe Girardi welcomes Chicago Cubs’ appointment of Dale Sveum as manager – MLB Update
Major League Baseball is undergoing massive changes during the offseason and almost all franchises are attempting to instil stability in their rosters and managing staff. The Chicago Cubs have not stayed behind in this and a proof was naming of new manager
Dale Sveum.
Sveum’s appointment was not surprising, given the fact that he has hands-on managerial experience with some of the best teams in business. New York Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi was all praise for Dale and welcomed his appointment, hoping the best for Dave
with his new job.
"I had a chance to know Dale a little bit, not a lot," Girardi told ESPNChicago.com as he watched the Michigan St.-Northwestern football game Saturday afternoon. "And obviously, he's had a number of jobs, whether it's been a third-base coach in Boston or
hitting coach in Milwaukee, and he's been around the game a long time and he's a guy that has prepared himself for this opportunity and I'm happy for him."
Girardi furthered that Sveum is an intelligent manager and understands the procedures at Chicago, primarily because he was accustomed to visiting the ballpark for at least 15 times each season during his stint as Milwaukee Brewers’ hitting coach, his assignment
prior to this appointment.
Although Dale has not been responsible for being the manager of any team, his association with top-teams and some of the best managerial staffs in the game make him a perfect choice for a team like the Cubs, who are low on form as well as budget.
When the Cubs fired Mike Quade last month, Girardi’s name popped up yet again as a possible replacement, like it has for so many years. However, the New York Yankees’ manager was unmoved by the talks and insisted that he was more than happy at the Bronx
and has no intention of moving to another club.
Nevertheless, with Theo Epstein now in charge of the Cubs, many eyes are waiting to see how the franchise performs, or at least turns out to be in the next season. Epstein has earned a reputation of putting teams together and this assignment will be his
biggest challenge to date.
