Joe Johnson happy to see Australia hosting major event of Australian Goldfields Open
Snooker lovers of Australia witnessed some tremendous snooker competition at the Bendigo Stadium arena in Victoria and supported their favourite potters during their run in the 2012 Australian Goldfields Open snooker tournament.
However, this year’s Australian Goldfields Open missed some big guns of snooker like the four-time World Snooker Championship winners, the Rocket Ronnie O’Sullivan and the Wizard of Wishaw John Higgins.
The event did not have that much thrill due to the absence of these two potters but still was an interesting event. The former World Snooker Championship winner, Joe Johnson was quite happy to see the game progressing in Australia. The event featured some
superb snooker minds during its run at the venue that has showed great determination in the event and proved their class.
However, he was not so happy with the response from the people of Australia but he is satisfied with the efforts of snooker governing body, World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) regarding the promotion of the game.
In his recent blog post on World Snooker website, “With Barry Hearn negotiating new tournaments all over the world, the Australian Goldfields Open, the second ranking event of the year, should have attracted all the top players but it was sad to see seven
of the top 16 not entering this relatively new event.”
He added, “It's great to see Australia hosting a big tournament and we hoped that it would get the backing of the players with a strong showing so that it becomes firmly established in the snooker calendar.”
Hearn has introduced many new snooker tournaments in this year’s snooker season which shows that the game is progressing well. The game will be reaching new borders this year and many new talents will be introduced during the circuit run. The World Snooker
Chairman is hoping that within the coming two years, snooker will be one of the most followed sports in the world.
It will be exciting to see many of the top guns of snooker battle it out with some of the relatively new players all trying to make their mark in the sport. The additional tournaments will give the fans a lot to cheer about as they watch their favourite
players flaunt their tremendous snooker skills.
