Joe Johnson knocks down a buzzer beater; Brooklyn Nets down Detroit Pistons 107-105 in double O.T: NBA Recap
Joe Johnson nailed a step back jumper at the buzzer to lift Brooklyn Nets to a 107-105 win over the Detroit Pistons in a double overtime thriller on Friday night. The last time, Nets won at the buzzer was way back in February
2009 when Devin Harris fired a game winner against the Philadelphia 76ers.
It was a close affair throughout the game. The Nets had pulled ahead late in the game before the Pistons came back to tie the score and take the game to overtime. Even in the second overtime the score was all square with 5.8 seconds
on the clock when Joe Johnson fired one in to seal the deal.
"The coaches and, like I say, my teammates have the confidence in putting the ball in my hands down the stretch, then I have to come up big for us," Johnson said who scored the final five points for the Nets and finished off with
a night-high 28 points.
Gerald Wallace posted a double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds while Deron Williams chipped in with 17 points and 6 assists for the night. Brandon Knight scored 22 points and Rodney Stuckey had 19 for the Pistons, who dropped
their third straight.
"We showed great resolve, great fight and we competed extremely hard," Pistons coach Lawrence Frank, said. "There's no one there that's happy with the consolation prize, (but) disappointed that we came up short because we know
we got it in both regulation and overtime. We got the stop; we just couldn't finish the play."
It was neck and neck between the both teams early in the game with the scores getting tied and the lead switching hands continuously. The Nets found spark midway through the second quarter and went for a 21-1 game changing run
to go up 54-38 with 2:38 minutes to halftime. The Pistons scored some baskets later in the quarter to reduce the deficit down to 47-59.
Detroit kept the Nets in check and it was still a one point game on 83-82 with 6:31 on the regulation. The Pistons were up 90-86 when Wallace scored the final four points for the Nets to tie the score and take the game into overtime.
It was close in the overtime as well with the score getting tied on 92 early. Brooklyn passed the ball in the safe hands of Williams who rewarded them by two back to back three pointers for the Nets to put them up 98-96 but the
Pistons scored four straight points and it was all even on 100 at the close of first overtime.
Detroit were by up by three early in the second overtime but the Nets scored four straight and it still tied on 105 all when Johnson made a jumper with less than a second on the clock to seal the deal.
