We were watching the red wings game and we were wondering who Joe Lewis was and why the red wings home rink is called Joe Lewis Arena?? Thank you!!

according to wikipedia, he's an english billionaire,   and there is no such arena in detroit, we have the Joe ....named after Joe Louis who was a great boxer from back in the day, before they just hugged each other in the ring.....

As everyone has already stated, he's a boxer from before you were born. There's also the Fist of Joe Louis located no too far away from the arena. I remember my dad taking me to it when I was a kid.

Joe Louis, nicknamed the brown bomber was the heavy weight boxing champion of the world in the 1940's.  His being an American and Black became a political propaganda issue before and during World War II when he fought and defeated the German champion Mat Schmelling.
