Joe Maddon signs on a three year extesnsion with Tampa Bay Rays - MLB News
According to sources, Tampa Bay Rays have finally finished their unfinished business as they agreed to a three year contract extension with team manager Joe Maddon. Although terms of the contract were not disclosed by the club, Maddon is very pleased with the offer.
Maddon displayed his high quality management skills last season. Although the Tampa Bay Rays were unable to live up to the expectations, the manager made a name for himself. The Rays are expected to announce the news in a conference on Friday. Signing a long term deal with the Rays, Maddon will be looking to work hard to achieve his desired goals this season.
Joe is also very happy about his situation. In an interview, he stated that he wants to be a part of Tampa Bay Rays. The management has given him enough powers to do what he wants without any restrictions. He further added the club provides an excellent working environment for the players and official staff. The 58-year-old will be looking to work hard with some of the fresh faces to help the Rays win the American League Central title.
"I don't want to go anywhere else. I love it here," Maddon said. "I've been given an opportunity here to do what I'm doing without the constraints, in a sense. It's a very free environment to work within, and I need that, and I appreciate that."
"We've come up short the last two years in the playoffs, but we did get there. We've got to extend that a little bit as we move forward. ... It's about winning. It is about getting to the last game of the season and winning it the next time we get a chance to be there," he added.
Entering the last year on his contract, Maddon won the 2011 American League Manager of the Year. He had won the same award in 2008 as well. When the Rays showed no urgency in extending Maddon’s contract this offseason, many were convinced that the manager will end up landing somewhere else. However, the club kept its promises as they offered Maddon a long term contract.
