Joe Perry beats Li Yan in Wild Card round: China Open 2011
The Fen Potter, Joe Perry, outplayed China’s Li Yan by a frame score of 5-2 in the wild card round best-of-nine match held at the Beijing University Students Gymnasium in China on Monday. The overall score-line between the players was 24-74, 106-0, 58-47,
67-0, 62-50, 15-53 and 74-17.
Yan took the opening frame with dominant breaks of 30 and 31 to take a 1-0 lead, but the 36-year-old Perry settled any early nerves, and fired up a mind boggling century break of 106 to level the things at 1-1.
The third frame was a scrappy affair and also the longest of the match. A bout of safety play was seen among the players; with reds all clustered around the coloured balls. Both players had plenty of chances but neither was able to capitalise. In the end
it was Perry who managed to win the frame on the pink ball to lead by 2-1, which he later extended to 4-1, as he also took the following two frames straight.
Perry wrapped up the fourth frame with a couple of quick fire 24 and 42 breaks, giving his opponent no chance. In the fifth frame Yan was the first to be among the balls but once again he could only manage a break of 14 and was punished by his opponent with
breaks of 33 and 28.
The match was almost through there, as Perry only needed one frame to seal victory, before the Chinese showed signs of life and pocketed the sixth frame with a decisive break of 51 to trail by 4-2.
It looked as if Yan believed he could pull off a win by making a great comeback, but it was all over in the next frame, as Perry produced classy breaks of 37 and 30 to register a comfortable 5-2 win over his opponent.
Shaun Murphy, who is in top form, awaits Joe Perry in the last 32 of the China Open 2011. That promises to be an entertaining match.
