Joe Perry ends Rod Lawler’s hopes of qualifying for the China Open 2011 – Snooker news
The man from Sicily, Joe Perry, has made it to the last 16 of the China Open 2011 after beating Rod Lawler by a frame score of 5-2 in the round four of the qualifiers held on February 27.
Lawler, who had reached the last round of the qualifiers after beating Kyren Wilson and Michael Holt with frames scores of 5-1 and 5-3 respectively, was kept in his chair for most of the time during the match.
The overall score-line between the players was 97-0, 10-71, 105-8, 8-71, 85-47, 71-47, and 101-30.
The first two frames were over within a blink of an eye.
In the first frame, Joe Perry was off with a flying start. He, giving no chance to Lawler, completely dominated the frame with a classy break of 97 to take the first blood 1-0.
Perry was again the first one to be among the balls in the next one but this time he broke at 10 bringing his opponent on the table who responded with break of 71 to level the things by 1-1.
Perry in the third frame played intelligently and gave a deadly snooker to Lawler. Lawler could not get away with it and gave 14 odd-points and a frame winning chance which was capitalised by Perry and with a couple of quick fires, (55 and 36) he went ahead
by 2-1.
But Rod the Plod, Rod Lawler, who has always been noted for slowing down the game, also showed his safety skills in the next one. Perry was not able to score any points as he was snookered this time and a chance was given to Lawler which resulted in a break
of 51 followed by another 15 later on to equalise the scores by 2-2.
The players were trading frames and it was now looking as if a tough competition is going to take place between the two before Lawler lost the next three straight.
The fifth and sixth frames were scrappy affairs as bout of safety was seen between the two but Perry was the one who at the end came on top of it. He was now only one frame away from the victory.
Lawler, who was trailing Perry by 4-2 now, got a good chance in the seventh and was on a run but he again threw it after a break of 30. Perry coming back on the table made a magnificent 97 once again and finished the matters off 5-2.
Joe Perry is now through to the last 16 where he will face the former world champion, Shaun Murphy.
