Joe Perry targets first ranking title at Bendigo Stadium: 2011 Australian Goldfields Open
New Snooker Season has been quite lucky for England’s Joe Perry, who has recently made it to the first round of 2011 Australian Goldfields Open. He not only reached the final of Players Tour Championships
(PTC) Event 1, but also qualified for the first major ranking event in Australia, 2011 Australian Goldfields Open.
Perry’s successful run in Players Tour Championships (PTC) Event 1 has played an important role in boosting his confidence and the player is now aiming high to win his first ever ranking title when
he flies to Australia next week. Perry defeated Fergal O’Brien by 5-2 in his qualifier of the fourth round to set up Mark Selby clash at City of Greater Bendigo,
So far, the 36-year-old has achieved what he desired and worked hard for. He booked his place in the Top 16, upgraded in PTC Order of Merit, played brilliantly in first event of PTC and booked a final
berth, and qualified for the 2011 Australian Goldfields Open tournament. What pleases Perry more is the fact that other player's have taken notice of his achievements, and his improved performance.
Perry was speaking to media reporters at a press conference, “I’ve hit all my other targets. I’ve made the Top 16, played single-table set up at the Crucible and played in major finals. Other players
have often said to me that they can’t believe that I haven’t done better, which is nice to hear.”
He added, “I’m really looking forward to going to Australia but it’s not a holiday. I’m going out there to win the tournament. It would be great to win my first ever ranking event there. It would
be massive for me and it would mean everything.”
Perry is now practicing at Terry Griffiths’ club under the latter's supervision and he believes having Griffiths behind his cue will help him win the title. Perry is also learning to control his mental
state during pressure hours in a match so that he can focus more on his game-play. He reckons Griffiths’ coaching will be quite effective to achieve that skill.
