Joe Philbin desirous of making Miami Dolphins "aggressive and attacking" – NFL News Update
The new head coach of Miami Dolphins, Joe Philbin is bent on making the team an "aggressive and attacking" outfit.
The long search by Dolphins for a head coach ended last week with Philbin being hired as the head coach.
Miami Dolphins has been without a permanent head coach since ex-coach, Tony Sparano was fired last month after Dolphins ended 6-10, being eliminated from the playoffs.
Even though the season ended for the Dolphins, and there were just three games remaining, Dolphins' owner Stephen Ross was determined to see a change and transformation in his team into a winning organisation.
Hence, he had Todd Bowles hurled in as the interim coach for the remaining three games.
Two other strong candidates, offensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos, Mike McCoy and Bowles had been sidelined for the job even though Bowles had led the Dolphins 2-1 in the last three games he coached. And McCoy had cancelled
his interview scheduled with the Oakland Raiders.
Ross and general manager Jeff Ireland overlooked the two men as they decided to hire Philbin and maintained they had made the right choice.
"Jeff Ireland and I felt Joe was the right choice to bring the Dolphins back to the success we enjoyed in the past." Ross said.
Ross said that Philbin reminded him of Don Shula. Shula has been the only Dolphins’ coach to lead the team to a Super Bowl event.
Philbin has been associated with the Green Bay Packers since 2003 and took over as the offensive coordinator in 2007.
His five years with Packers saw the team ranking in the top ten in National Football League (NFL), in terms of yardage for five seasons.
Packers won the Super Bowl the last year and finished 15-1 this season. Philbin also played a great role in the development of Packers’ quarterback, Aaron Rodgers.
This was acknowledged by Rodgers who said the role played by Philbin was very important for their success.
“Joe has been a large part of my success as a player and growth as a person. I really enjoy our conversations together.” Rodgers said.
Philbin has been intent on making the Dolphins a winning team from day one.
“The Dolphins have a strong nucleus to build around, and working with everyone in the organization, I know that together we will return the team to its winning tradition.” Philbin said.
Philbin recently bore the loss of his son, the 21-year-old Michael Philbin who drowned in Wisconsin River.
Philbin desires to make the Dolphins team into a winning organization as he looks forward to dispelling his new responsibilities.
