Joe Philbin land as head coach for Miami Dolphins – NFL News Update
The long search by the Miami Dolphins for a new head coach has finally culminated with the hiring of the former offensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers, Joe Philbin.
Dolphins had already narrowed down their search in recent days, restricting it to three men, Philbin, offensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos, Mike McCoy and interim coach, Todd Bowles.
The head coaching slot had become vacant after Tony Sparano was fired as the head coach, following a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles that saw Dolphins being eliminated from the playoffs.
Dolphins’ owner, Stephen Ross, is determined to bring about a change in the organisation, so he replaced Sparano with Bowles, even though only three games were left in the season.
Bowles who led the Dolphins, 2-1, was sidelined for the job.
The move would come as a surprise for McCoy, who had earlier cancelled an interview scheduled with general manager of the Oakland Raiders, Reggie McKenzie, for their head coaching vacancy.
McCoy was probably too confident of his status with the Dolphins, therefore he took such a step.
However, Ross and general manager, Jeff Ireland, decided to have Philbin instead.
"Jeff Ireland and I felt Joe was the right choice to bring the Dolphins back to the success we enjoyed in the past", Ross said.
Philbin has been working with the Packers since 2003 and took over as the offensive coordinator of the team in 2007.
He thanked Ross and Ireland for giving him the opportunity to be the head coach and hopes to make Dolphins a winning team.
“The Dolphins have a strong nucleus to build around, and working with everyone in the organization, I know that together we will return the team to its winning tradition”, Philbin said.
Philbin also did not forget to thank the Packers team for supporting him during his stay there.
Packers’ coach, Mike McCarthy, stated he would miss working with Philbin and especially the daily conversations he had with him.
He commended his work by saying that Philbin did everything that an offensive coordinator does and he would not “hesitate” to let him call the plays.
With the Packers, it had been McCarthy who would always call the plays.
Packers’ quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, termed Philbin as being very important to their success, saying he worked a lot for them, from dispensing his coaching responsibilities to his role in practice and meetings.
“Joe has been a large part of my success as a player and growth as a person. I really enjoy our conversations together”, Rodgers said.
Earlier, the Dolphins had wanted to hire Jeff Fisher as the head coach but he chose to be the St Louis Rams' coach instead.
