Joe Saunders sparks as Arizona Diamondbacks defeat Colorado Rockies 5-3 - MLB Update
Arizona Diamondbacks’ starter, Joe Saunders had a notable day with the ball as he pitched his six innings superbly and struck-out four batters with an ERA of 3.88 in the Diamondbacks’ 5-3 win against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field, Colorado on September
7.
First two innings were in pitchers’ favour as they restricted the batters from taking any runs. Gerardo Parra drove a double-run shot to deep left-centre but the rest of the Diamondbacks’ batters got out without contributing any run in the first inning as
Aaron Hill and Justin Upton both flied out to right-field while Miguel Montero lined out to centre-field.
Similarly, Rockies’ second baseman, Mark Ellis hit a single-run drive towards centre-field but at right-field Dexter Fowler flied out and at short-stop position, Carlos Gonzalez popped out without giving some potential to his team at the bottom of first
inning. Wilin Rosario reached third base on an infield single but at first base, Seth Smith ground out and at short-stop position, Ty Wigginton ground out during the second inning.
In the third inning, both teams broke their silence and took two runs each to tie the game 2-2. Montero struck a two-run homer (428 feet) towards centre-field and Upton posted a single run to give the Diamondbacks a convincing lead. On the other hand, Kevin
Millwood hit a solo homer (406 feet) to left-field and Gonzalez struck a one-run homer (447 feet) towards right-centre to produce an exciting game.
Rockies went ahead 3-2 at the bottom of fourth inning when Rosario hit a one-run homer (465 feet) to left-centre. Saunders permitted three runs, three home runs, one walk, seven hits and three earned runs on his 110 pitches. He said, “I figured he was either
going to chew me out or light a spark. It was nice to see Gibby come out there and say, 'I've got faith in you, let's make some pitches and get out of this mess here.”
During the sixth inning, Diamondbacks’ batters smashed two runs to take a 4-3 lead. Paul Goldschmidt scored one run when John McDonald hit a double-run drive to left-field. The second run was taken by McDonald when Saunders singled off left-field. Upton
homered (393 feet) towards left-field to give the Diamondbacks a 5-3 lead in the seventh inning.
With this impressive victory, Diamondbacks won the three-game series 2-1 against Rockies at Colorado.
