Joe Woods' Red leads after day two at Porto Cervo 2011 Audi Melges 32 Sailing Series
Second day of the 2011 Audi Melges 32 Sailing Series saw a new leader as Joe Woods’ sailing team, Red, made a dramatic turn to finish on top with 10 points at the end on Saturday, June 18 at Porto
Cervo. The favourable weather conditions made the race more exciting as Filippo Pacinotti’s Brontolo finished second, two points down at 12.
The sailors had three races on the second day, with breeze blowing 15 to over 20 knots across the Porto Cervo waters which produced an ideal platform for the regatta. Red finished the first race in
first place, however, it collided with the fellow yacht GBR 121 Highlife, in the second race.
Both boats went through extensive bow damage, and their keel bolts bent. However, owner of GBR 121 Highlife, Peter Rogers accepted the responsibility of the incident and Woods was awarded average
points for the remaining regatta.
While describing the incident to the local reporters, mainsheet trimmer of Red, David Lenz said, “There was about a minute and a half to go to the start. We had just tacked on to starboard and were
preparing to line up for the start. Highlife were on port and tried to go behind us but they didn’t make it and they ended up hitting us pretty much head on. It was like a car crash.”
He added “I saw it coming at the last moment and braced myself but the impact knocked my sunglasses off my head and clean across the cockpit. One of our guys was catapulted down the hatch and injured
his shoulder, the rest of us were pretty shaken up, with a few major bumps and bruises.”
However, Woods was awarded 2.5 points based on his points in the previous four raced which were 1, 3, 5, 1. The overall result at the end of the second day is as follows.
