Joe louis?

So whats this facination with joe louis? He was a great fighter but not the best.He wasn't as fast as Muhammed Ali,he didn't have the best footwork in fact it was sloppy at times and he didn't hit as hard as everyone thinks he did.The only reason why he was champ so long was because he fought bums. Why is a heavyweight champ fighting middleweights like billy conn and almost loseing the fights.joe louis was around 195-200 lbs.if you call him the greatest then you have to be crazy.Do you really think he could have beaten a 23 year old Muhammed Ali.Ali was 6'3" 210 lbs was fast as lightning, had brilliant footwork, and had a good chin.if you don't think he had a good chin then how many times did he get knocked out in his career????

The point i am trying to make is stop putting louis up there as the best.He was the best during the 40's not anymore. The compitition is alot better and there alot bigger.

  1. the only reason people call louis's opponents bums is because he beat them all. he cleared out the heavyweight division in the 30's and 40's. he and ali are equal in terms of greatness. joe louis had perfect footwork in his prime, maybe you should watch some of his fights before you talk **** about him. jack johnson was not the first black superstar, he was the first black champion, and was hated by whites for being black, and was hated by blacks for acting so brash and arrogant. without joe louis, ali never could of done what he did, end of story.

  2. your telling me the heavyweights today are better than joe louis dude you are stupid the men today are big yes but most of them are slow boring and have no guts bums fighting bums joe louis believe it or not fought some big men like the size they are today and he destroyed them check out buddy baer abe simon primo carnera etc there was more these fighters of today in the heavyweight division are bums no question about it if there was a tough 6 foot 3 220 lb that was good out there there would be alot of those big boring bums falling like trees learn about joe louis before you come up here and say some big lazy bum is better than he was

  3. I think Joe Louis was such a success because he was a tragic figure a lot of Americans at the time both white and black could relate to.  He served his time for his country he was blue collar and even though he may not have been as technical as Ali he was very good.  It really is relative to the era in which he fought today's fighters are a lot more technical compared to the pugilists of Louis' time but those fighters were a great deal tougher.  You have to really judge the boxer at their time era and not set them to today's standards boxing is a dynamic sport and it changes with the times to reflect advances.  I take it your a big Ali fan which is great but do you think a 23 year old Ali would have a whispers chance against a young Mike Tyson?

  4. Joe Louis is an icon, so people tend to rate idols much better over time.

It is true that in definable comparisons, such as track, where you have a stop watch or distance measurement that tells you exactly how athletes from the past compare to the present, where they don't measure up, people still try to say Jesse Owens would be better than today's athletes.

So anyone who says Joe Louis would not beat modern fighters is like talking bad about someones mother.

It won't change people's opinions and causes hard feelings.

  5. joe louis is an all time great, was only defeated once in his prime (to schmelling) which he avenged.

was 61-1 when he fought charles.

had the fastest hands in boxing before patterson & ali came along.....& was the hardest puncher (besides dempsey) prior to liston.

made 25 defences during his championship reign , and still found time to do military service.

  6. From August of 1936 to June of 1948 Louis was undefeated.  In 27 of those fights they were title bouts.  He was 34-0 during that time.  That was his prime and it shows.   I don't think any thing else needs to be said about Joe Louis.

  7. Joe Louis was a great fighter for his time could he beat a Evander Holyfield no the game has changed could Jim Brown run over the line backers of to day and out run the defencive back no would Joe Lewis be a champion today Would say no the guys are to big and fast for Joe Louis lets just keep it real

  8. joe louis without a doubt was one of the great heavyweight champions who reigned from 06/22/1937 - 03/01/1949.historical impact and quality of opposition is beyond reproach. his opponents included primo carnera, max baer, max schmeling, jack sharkey, james j. braddock, tommy farr, john henry lewis, billy conn, jersey joe walcott, ezzard charles, and rocky marciano. 25 title defenses, 21 by knockout. his record as champion stands out for ages, and a sports icon who transcended the sport. 69-3 (55)...nuff said !!!!

  9. Joe Louis was the first black sports superstar.  It was he who opened the door for other black athletes to excel on the national level, no matter what the sport.  Perhaps this is how he should be best remembered.
