Joel Parkinson and Gabriel Medina power into the fourth round at 2012 Hurley Pro
Australia’s Joel Parkinson and Brazil’s Gabriel Medina advanced through into the fourth round at the 2012 Hurley Pro, the sixth of ten stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour, after claiming top honours in their
respective Round 3 heats that went down at the high-performance Lower Trestles in California, America, on Wednesday, September 19.
Parkinson dominated America’s Taylor in the seventh heat to confirm his place in the next round while bringing the event to a premature end for his rival.
The eighth heat saw French Polynesia’s Michel Bourez barely fall short of the score posted by Medina, consequently getting eliminated from the competition while sending his rival through into the next round.
The latest day of the competition promised to deliver a heavy dose of enthralling performance as the elite ASP surfers found themselves with glassy four-to-six foot waves at the primary event site. There was plenty of juice in the waves to give them an opportunity
to cut loose and treat the fans of the sport to an exquisite show.
Pitted against Knox in the seventh heat, Parkinson definitely had a greater chance of taking the win, though he was careful not underestimate the capabilities of the ASP World Tour veteran.
As the battle got underway, the Australian surfer got off to a near-perfect start, earning a 9.93 off his first business-wave to instantly put his rival under immense amount of pressure.
As the heat progressed, Parkinson continued the momentum to eventually back his perfect start with an exquisite 8.40-point ride, thus reaching a heat-total of 18.33 points.
Knox responded with a heat-total of 13.33 points, which comprised of a 7.00 and 6.33-point ride, thus having to taste defeat.
The eighth heat pitted the young Brazilian force Medina against Bourez in man-on-man bout for the Round 4 spot.
The battle turned out to be a nail-biting one, with both the surfers putting on a brilliant performance, clearly determined to settle for nothing less than a win.
After going through a series of average wave-scores, Medina raised the level of the heat with a superb 9.27-point ride and immediately followed it up with an impressive 8.10-point wave to reach a heat-total of 17.37 points.
Bourez was nothing short of exquisite either and put up a solid fight to keep his rival on his toes until the end. However, he eventually finished with a heat-total of 17.06 points, which included an 8.13 and 8.93-point wave, to surrender victory and thus
the Round 4 spot to his rival.
