Joel Parkinson and Josh Kerr survive Round 2 of Oakley Pro Bali – Surfing news
Australia’s Joel Parkinson and his fellow countryperson Josh Kerr successfully bounced back in their Round 2 heats of the Oakley Pro Bali, stop no. 5 on the 2013 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour, which recommenced at Keramas
in Bali, Indonesia, on Wednesday, June 19, 2013.
Parkinson got the better of the local talent Oney Anwar in the third heat to make his way through into the third round, while removing the latter from the contention for the event title.
The fourth heat saw Hawaii’s Dusty Payne failing to hold his own against Kerr, which consequently forced him to surrender the Round 3 spot to his rival and make a premature exit from the competition.
Clean four-to-six foot waves graced the main event venue on the latest day of the competition, setting up a nice stage for the surfers to display their determination and desperation to stay alive in the event through their performance.
Parkinson, reigning ASP World Champion, was not at his best on the opening day of the Oakley Pro Bali, but he surely did not let his fans down on day 2 of the event.
The 32-year-old Australian got off to a slow start, but gained momentum as the heat progressed to eventually post an 8.60 on the score-board. He soon backed it up with a 7.50-point ride to move to a decisive heat-total of 16.10 points.
“It was pumping at first light, but the tide was running out so our heat was a little slow. I was stoked to get a win though as I had a shocker yesterday. Oney (Anwar) is a really good kid and a really talented surfer,” Parkinson said. “He was telling me
that if he got a set out there, he was going to do some damage and he certainly did.”
Despite possessing local knowledge of the waves and a significant crowd cheering for him, Anwar failed to unsettle Parkinson. His performance, however, was nothing short of impressive, considering the man he was pitted against in an elimination heat. A heat-total
of 14.03, comprising of a 7.13 and 6.90-point ride, was what he managed to finish with in the end.
The fourth heat saw Kerr earn himself a spot in Round 3 after getting the better of Payne.
The Australian surfer got off to a solid start with an 8.00-point ride and went on to add an additional 5.00 points to his account, thus finishing with a heat-total of 13.00 points.
Payne concluded the heat on a heat-total of 11.00 points after scoring an 8.00 and 3.00 off his top-two waves. As a result, he was eliminated from the competition.
