Joel Parkinson and Kalani Chapman move into Round 4 of Billabong Pipe Masters – 2011 ASP World Tour
The last stop of the 2011 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour, which is the final leg of Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, Billabong Pipe Masters, resumed with Round 3 at the famed Banzai Pipeline in Oahu, Hawaii, on Friday, December 9. The opening heat of the day pitted Australia’s Joel Parkinson against Hawaii’s Aamion Goodwin, while Hawaii’s Kalani Chapman took on his compatriot Dusty Payne in the second heat.
Neither Parkinson nor Goodwin looked comfortable in the deadly barrels during the first heat, which resulted in a low-scoring battle. Parkinson, however, managed to clinch the win eventually to make his way into Round 4, eliminating Goodwin from the competition in the process.
The second heat saw Chapman prevail over Payne to extend his life in the competition through a confirmation of his place in the next round, while the latter got removed from the contention for the event-title.
Parkinson had exhibited quite an impressive form throughout the year, performing with consistency to maintain his place in the top-ten on the ASP World Title rankings. Looking to finish off the elite tour on a good note, the formidable Australian force was determined to collect a good result.
As Parkinson faced off with the local sensation, Goodwin, in the first heat of Round 3, neither of the two surfers looked at ease in the 10-foot deadly barrels. The Australian managed to collect a 2.67 and 4.67 off his two business-waves, finishing with a heat-total of 7.34 points. The score was hardly a competitive one, but still proved sufficient to carry him off to victory.
Goodwin failed to make much of an impact during the heat and eventually finished with a heat-total of 5.03 points, which comprised of a 3.23 and 1.80-point wave. As a result, he ended up getting eliminated from the competition.
The second heat divided the support of the local crowd as Chapman and Payne squared off with each other in a battle for survival. Payne had struggled to adjust to the size of the waves a day earlier and continued to trouble him on the second day of the competition as well. As a result, he was only able to collect a 3.33 and 3.50 off his best-two waves, consequently finishing with a heat-total of 6.83 points.
Chapman, on the other hand, got himself a solid start in the latest heat by utilising a wave to post an 8.00 on the score-board and pretty much sealing the deal. He soon added another 2.27 points to his account, taking his heat-total to 10.27 points, which served to confirm his position in the next round.
