Joel Parkinson downs Mitchel Coleborn to move into Round 4 at Volcom Fiji Pro – Surfing News
Australian powerhouse Joel Parkinson successfully made the Round 4 cut at Volcom Fiji Pro, the fourth of ten stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour, after putting on a phenomenal performance to get the better
of fellow countryperson Mitchel Coleborn in the sixth heat of Round 3 that went down at the alternate site of Restaurants in Tavarua, Fiji, on Saturday, June 9.
The showdown featured a determined fight from Coleborn, but his efforts turned out to be in vain as he succumbed to his rival’s onslaught, consequently getting eliminated from the contention for the event title.
The massive swell that had arrived at the main venue site of Cloudbreak on Friday was just as mouth-watering on Saturday, but the event organisers had opted for the four-to-six foot waves at Restaurants. The conditions on offer at the secondary event promised
to serve as an ideal stage for the top surfing talent from around the globe to take each other on for survival.
The sixth heat of Round 3 saw Parkinson square off with Coleborn in a one-on-one battle for the Round 4 spot. Parkinson had been on a roll since the start of the latest season of ASP World Title Series and currently sat on the No.1 spot in the ASP World
Title rankings. He was expected to continue his momentum at Fiji, especially with the sort of surfing conditions that the competition was currently taking place in.
As the sixth heat got underway, Parkinson got off to a solid start, quickly detecting an incoming swell to lock a perfect barrel. Riding smoothly through the barrel, the Australian phenom posted a near-perfect 9.50 on the score-board to take an early lead.
He backed it up with another impressive wave, which went for an 8.50, take move to a heat-total of 18.00 points.
Coleborn did not get off to the most confident of starts, but continued to show persistence throughout the course of the battle. A determined hunt enabled him to post a 6.00 and 9.00 on the score-board for a heat-total of 15.00 points. However, the effort
proved to be inadequate, leaving him in a 3.00-point deficit and consequently forcing him to surrender victory to Parkinson.
